Eight Great Mates: An LGBT Ship Fest

The holidays always seems to contaminate my mind with images of love. Snuggling by the fireplace, finding that complicated balance of seeing both families in two days, kissing under the mistletoe… Romance flourishes this time of year.

With this in mind, I decided that my Cohort Countdown piece would explore the topic of romance. But, have some fun along the way. So, the following list compiles my favorite LGBT romances. Regardless of canon. Regardless of medium. In no particular order!

These are my Eight Great Mates.

* Disclaimer: There are likely to be spoilers in my list… You’ve been warned.

  1. Max Caulfield and Chloe Price (Life is Strange)

Not mentioning these two lovely ladies would be a disservice to fans of The Cohort. Not only did I write an entire article addressing the game’s unfortunately miss-able theme, but many of the Cohort have mentioned it as one of the best gaming experiences of 2015.

Pricefield

Chloe and Max complete each other; Chloe brings out the rebel and the confidence in Max, while Max keeps Chloe grounded and helps her grow into a better woman. Their chemistry is undeniable – even if you did favor Max x Warren, you can’t deny the spark between Max x Chloe. It’s literally impossible to miss.

  1. Stiles Stilinski x Derek Hale (Teen Wolf)

I’ll admit, I know absolutely nothing about Teen Wolf. I’ve never watched an episode. I had to Google what the characters’ full names were. I don’t plan on watching any episodes. I’m just not about it.

So, why are they on my list? I discovered Sterek through Tumblr. And after falling down the rabbit hole, I started to believe that the relationship was canon in the show. Having two insanely hot guys so madly in love with each other almost convinced me to start watching the series, despite the whole werewolf theme and me being a total coward.

Then, I found out that the couple wasn’t really a thing, and I’ve refused to watch ever since. Instead, I enjoy the ship from the far off world of Tumblr.

  1. Oerba Dia Vanille x Oerba Yun Fang (Final Fantasy XIII)

It wouldn’t be an Adam Kuta list without mention of some sort of Final Fantasy game or character! And, despite being one of my least favorite from the series, my head-canon relationship between Vanille and Fang needs to be pointed out. Plus, I have a thing for Mage x Warrior-type relationships, and this completely describes these two.

Vanille flourishes as a literal mage, but, even in personality, has a much more internal approach to her scenarios. Meanwhile, Fang is a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield – and with a tongue to boot! Sassy, fierce, and a stronger female character than Lightning could ever be, Fang embodies the Warrior-like external dominance that completes Vanille’s internalization.

People seem to chalk this pairing’s chemistry up as “sisterly” love, because they come from the same tribe. But, so many of their interactions – through dialogue or body language/animation – scream more than this… and I’ll believe it forever.

  1. Frodo Baggins x Samwise Gamgee (The The Lord of the Rings series)

Okay. Seriously. Have you SEEN how these two men look at each other? If ever there has been a story of romance budding… this is it.

And, that’s all that really needs to be said.

  1. Dean Thomas x Seamus Finnigan (The Harry Potter Series)

Despite not being canon, even the actors themselves are on board with this ship. Which makes it basically canon. Right?

Considering that these characters are never apart in any scene, ever… it’s hard to deny the obvious connection they share. In both novel AND film form.

Plus… they’d be pretty adorable together.

  1. Shulk x Alvis (Xenoblade Chronicles)

Maybe this stemmed because my playthrough had Alvis meet Shulk while Shulk was rocking an oversized sweater and matching booty shorts… but, after his first introduction in the narrative, I shipped it.

If you play the game with this relationship in mind, it just may convince you. (Ask Mark or Kyle!) Every move Alvis makes is for Shulk… out of pure love. And it just works.

Bonus points if they meet while Shulk is wearing booty shorts.

  1. Korra x Asami (Legend of Korra)

Nothing makes me happier than knowing that Korrasami is canon. Completely canon. Official. Legit. Perfect.

Korrasami

My best friend and I speculated the budding romance near the end of Season Two due to the characters’ growing chemistry. We shrugged it off as “never going to happen.” Especially with how ‘clear’ the writers had made Mako x Korra’s romantic tension.

And then… real relationship issues came up. Real-life problems. Lack of chemistry. Lack of understanding. Lack of compromise. And it was glorious.

Then Asami stepped up her game, and the two girls’ connection grew by the episode… I literally screamed in the final moments when Asami sat down next to Korra in the finale. It happened. It was confirmed. So good!

What makes this relationship even better is the bisexuality of the characters. Both girls dated Mako, and then each other. And there’s no weirdness about dating either gender. Awesome.

  1. Roxas x Axel (The Kingdom Hearts series)

This… is my OTP. My One True Pairing.

Axel’s character and arc all revolve around Roxas. Despite being heartless, Axel acknowledges that he has feelings for his ‘friend.’ And if the story of someone without a heart caring so much for someone else isn’t a true tale of love… I don’t know what is!

Akuroku2 Akuroku3 Akuroku1
Seriously… Look at this and tell me he isn’t mad in love with Roxas.

You can’t.

The above eight pairings do a great job at representing my favorite LGBT romances, but many more went unspoken. Sherlock Holmes x Watson, Sora x Riku, Iron Bull x Dorian (or anyone really!), Jamal Lyon x me…

The Real Ship: Adam and Jussie

One of the things that I tend to do, as a gay male, is find same-sex pairings – even when they aren’t canon. It’s amazing how different character relationships can be when you open yourself up to that possibility.

This is why I stress diversity and representation. Because, I believe we should all be exposed to the realities of all people and all situations. Couplings like the eight examples above help provide a solid proof that – yes, we exist. And we’re just as relevant and awesome as any other character out there. We matter.

So… Who are YOUR favorite LGBT pairings? Any that you think I left out?
